Coach Matthew Moore’s fencing began in 1984 as a student of Fencing Master Raymond Finkleman. The fencing program at that time was a part of the Montgomery County Public Schools alternate physical education program. Having caught the bug, he continued to train with Chevy Chase Fencing Club from 1985 to 1988. Matt was competitive in the Washington DC area as a junior fencer, qualifying for the US Junior Olympic Championships three years in a row, first in foil and later in epee. He also qualified to fence at the US National Championships in Phoenix, AZ in 1987.
After fencing for a year in college, Matt stepped away from fencing while earning a B.A. and M.A. in Religions at The George Washington University. He took up the study of Aikido for 7 years during college.
After college, Matt began teaching religion at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington DC, where for two years he served as a moderator for the school’s fencing club. His students competed in local competitions and did relatively well as newcomers. After Archbishop Carroll, Matt taught at Paul VI Catholic High school and Washington Latin Public Charter School, eventually coming to Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt MD, where he currently teaches Latin.
